There is an unspoken belief that the sound of the basketball hitting the court mimics the pounding of the ceremonial drum. The energy, the power, the spirit of the sound of the human heartbeat embodies the strength and tradition of basketball in the Native American community.
Celebrating the potential Native American youth represent, Oregon State and Nike N7 joined forces to recognize Native American Heritage Month with a non-conference game between the Beavers and Texas Southern.
Uniforms designed for performance and lower environmental impact were worn, featuring turquoise–a departure from the traditional black and orange–a color symbolic of friendship and community in Native American culture.
Focused on creating awareness for the need to bring sport to Native American and Aboriginal youth, this game stressed the commitment to helping young athletes unleash their potential through sport.
